To the Honourable the President and Members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled.
We the undersigned urge that the anti-association laws, colloquially called 'the anti-bikie laws', be opposed by the legislative council on the basis that they are abhorrent to the principals of democracy and contravene the United Nations Bill of Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Further, we ask this be done not to benefit the minority group labeled as 'bikies', but on the basis that should this legislation be enacted, it will disadvantage the majority, for no one law can be introduced against on person or group and must be applied equally to all people. This means, despite the misnomer and the misleading name 'anti-bikie legislation', it will be used in ways on individuals and groups in the future that no parliament can now predict.
We urge the legislative Council to adopt the higher principals of this debate and protect the basic freedoms, being freedom of association and freedom of speech (which are inextricably linked to one being alloyed by attack on the other), which for generations Australian Soldiers have given their lives to defend.
