We know the old saying 'People in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones'. Well here is a collection of articles on police breaking the law, in some cases, in the worst kind of way.

Cop charged over speedy Cold Chisel escort

A SOUTH-WEST police officer has been charged with hoon driving and two others fined after an internal investigation into a speeding police escort for Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes on Saturday.
The senior constable, who had been leading the escort on a motorcycle, has been charged with reckless driving after he was allegedly clocked by a speed camera travelling at 129km/h - 49km/h above the speed limit - while escorting Barnes along the Bussell Hwy to his concert in Margaret River.

Two marked police cars travelling behind Barnes' vehicle were allegedly travelling at 110kmh and 116kmh.
The drivers, a sergeant and a first class constable, have been issued with infringements. All three officers will also face disciplinary action. Under anti-hoon laws, police can immediately impound vehicles of drivers found to be speeding by 45km/h or more.
If the driver does not own the car, a substitute vehicle can be surrendered and seized for 28 days.

The senior constable involved in this case does not own a vehicle.

Yesterday, Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan warned that the officers would be charged or fined if found to have broken the law.
But he said it was unlikely they would lose their jobs.

"Historically, police officers who have committed traffic offences don't usually lose their jobs, not usually on the first instance anyway,'' he said.

"We understand there was a threat that the concert could have been cancelled because the band were extremely late.

"There were 12,000 people at that concert. We were concerned that those 12,000 people would move into the Margaret River area.

"We were also concerned that the buses that were ferrying some of those people were also ferrying leavers and so we would have had a particularly difficult police operation on our hands if the concert was cancelled.''

'Speeding cop back on duty

Sergeant Steven Michael Kent (45) was given a spent conviction, fmed $650 with $121.95 court costs and had his licence disqualified for eight months.

The court heard Sergeant Kent, based in Kwinana at the time, had just completed a 14-hour shift when he drove his own motorcycle at 148km/h in an 80km/h zone on Baldivis Road on March 18. He was ordered to surrender his motorcycle for 28 days under WA hoon laws, and was placed-on administrative duties until internal investigations were subsequently · concluded by police.

'Chase' cops stood down

Police Commissioner's SonBy Sunday Times | Nicole Cox - Police Reporter
Published April 10, 2011

TWO police officers have been suspended over claims they tried to evade speeding fines, saying they were engaged in a pursuit.

The officers have been stood down over a $75 fine and at least two other cases are under review, amid concerns that speeding infringements have been fraudulently "written off'.

The Sunday Times understands the two suspended constables, claimed to have been chasing a vehicle along Stirling Highway, Cottesloe, last year when they were snapped by a speed camera allegedly travelling 7km over the 60km limit. But a review of several seconds of video footage taken by the camera after the alleged offence revealed there were no other cars in sight.

Internal affairs officers are also probing if the police vehicle's emergency lights and sirens were activated. The investigation has been referred to the Corruption and Crime Commission and police are considering if charges can be laid against the officers - who were both working at the Perth police station - for attempting to pervert the course of justice and falsifying paperwork to "write off' the fine. Under the Road Traffic Code police and emergency services personnel are exempt from speeding tickets if the offence occurs during "official duties" and the driver is taking reasonable care with blue or red flashing lights or a siren.

The scandal comes just weeks after The Sunday Times revealed that thousands of people had escaped criminal charges because "incompetent" officers had failed to file basic paperwork and court briefs. A spokeswoman for Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan said yesterday that the force could not provide specific detail about the case but "the allegations under investigation are that the officers provided false or misleading information to justify an exemption from prosecution for a speeding offence".

She said the officers were stood down on April I. WA Police Union President Russell Armstrong said he could not comment in depth as the matter was under investigation and union lawyers were acting for the two suspended officers.
But he warned the state's 5900 officers that it was not worth losing their jobs over a speeding fine.

Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan's son hurt in 'drug lab' blast

Police Commissioner's SonBy Perth Now | Posted March 21, 2011

POLICE Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan's son was one of five people who suffered serious burns in an alleged drug lab explosion in Carlisle yesterday.

Mr O'Callaghan said his son Russell, 29, received serious head, shoulder and arm injuries in the explosion.

Four men, one of them in a critical condition, and a woman have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Police say three of the adults and two children, aged three and four, were found in a Ford Falcon about 20m from the explosion, yelling for help, at about 5.15pm on Sunday in Carlisle.

Mr O'Callaghan said he had not yet visited his son in Royal Perth Hospital.

"As a family, we're suffering deeply at the moment,'' he said.

He said he would be working as normal and would not be taking time off over the incident.

The commissioner said he had only "occasional'' contact with his son, who is from his first marriage and who has received counselling in the past for drug use and depression.

He said he was not sure if his son, who is also a father, needed further treatment for a depressive disorder or drug addiction.

Mr O'Callaghan said he would not be involved in the police investigation of the incident but he had tried to contact his son yesterday......
